23 Months

WOW! Where has the year gone? This is the last update of 2014, and the last time Jax will have a “XX Months” update….next time, Jax will be 2 YEARS OLD! I’m glad to be doing away with the monthly count of his age, although we’ve mostly discarded it in real-life (instead saying “he’ll be 2 at the end of January”). Regardless, Jax is such an amazing and wonderful little boy and we are so blessed to call him ours. We never knew we could love a boy so much!

New Vocabulary:

  • Hi
  • Rainbow
  • (Aunt) Tabi & (Uncle) Darin and the names of their 3 boys!
  • Come here
  • Home (he recognizes our street now and says Home! Home! until we pull into the garage)
  • Room
  • Bug
  • Green
  • Help and Help Me
  • Moley! (guacamole)
  • Hanukkah & Menorah (a little garbled, but he knows what he’s trying to say!)
  • Yes! (finally – it was kind of annoying having everything be “no” lol)
  • All done/All gone
  • Love you Mama/Mommy! (which we are oh-so-excited to finally hear) and also says it to Nana, Aunt Panda, Papa, and the Guh-Guhs 🙂
  • Laundry
  • Sentences! And manners! He says “play, please” and also “thank you Mama/Mommy”

New Skills:

  • Getting undressed (shirt and pants)
  • Talking on the phone
  • He’s starting to learn to count, although when he says four it sounds like wh*re instead which always makes us laugh
  • He’s a huge climber and can also jump with both feet leaving the ground now.
  • He likes puzzles – figuring out how something works or playing a game, he’s pretty smart
  • Singing! We’re working on the ABC song and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
  • Carrying a tune (he can do-do-do to “Eye of the Tiger” like nobody’s business)
  • Ask Jax what a drum says, he goes “do do do”, ask about a cymbal, he says “tsch tsch tsch”, both complete with hand motions.
  • Opening the garage and front doors, which meant the introduction of those obnoxious plastic pieces on the doorknob which are also adult-proof.
  • Opening the car doors
  • Getting better using forks and spoons, and he’s even started using a plate.
  • Helping with tasks such as: put this in the laundry basket, take this to your room, throw this in the garbage,

New Likes:

  • Bananas
  • Guacamole – he definitely takes after me with the love of Chili’s chips and salsa/guacamole!
  • Snuggling with Mommies in our bed in the morning and watching Mickey Mouse together. We used to do this more often then fell out of habit of doing it, but now when one of us goes to get him in the morning he runs to the gate by our side of the house and says “Mama, bed? Mickey Mouse!” Cutest. Thing. Ever.
  • His super-cool new light-up Star Wars shoes, complete with light saber sound effects
  • Christmas lights

New Dislikes:

  • Getting cleaned up before getting up from the table. We had switched him out of the booster seat and just had him sitting on cushions on our dining table chairs, but he kept getting up mid-meal and running into the living room to smear his gooey face on the leather couch, or would throw a fit when we tried wiping him up. So he lost that privilege and is back in the booster seat with his “seatbelt” again.
  • He also has a renewed hatred of getting his diaper changed and pitches a fit when you put him up on the changing table. I really can’t wait til he is potty-trained!

And Everything Else:

  • He’s really starting to exhibit independence. This is where Mommies have to give up a little control and just let him go at it. He’s been having a great time figuring out things on his own and having fun. We let him run around in the backyard now by himself (we sit on the porch and watch) and he has a blast. The other day he brought J a flower he picked for her – so cute! He’s also wanting to do things for himself like washing in the bath and putting on his shoes. He likes helping pick out his outfit for the day and brushes his hair and teeth. It’s so fun to see him become his own little (wonderful) person!
  • My cousin Tabi and her family moved to our city this month! Tabi and I were very close throughout our childhood and although we lived a few hours apart, we have always had a bond like sisters. I am so excited to have the opportunity to reconnect with her and watch our children grow up together!
  • Jaxson got to experience his first Christmas parade, which he loved. He especially enjoyed seeing all the high school bands playing the drums! We also drove through our local park that sets up a huge light display and he really had a good time. We also found a home that has a whole light show set to music and Jax LOVED it. He kept conducting in the back seat of the car!
  • We went to a Hanukkah parade! It is usually all about Christmas where we live, since we don’t really have a huge Jewish community like J grew up with in South Florida, so it was really nice to be able to go out and celebrate of Hanukkah with our little family. They had Hebrew music which he loved and dance and sang along with, faux snow, and a parade with menorahs on top of the cars.
  • Speaking of Hanukkah, we also went down to South Florida to celebrate with J’s family! This was the first year going for Jax and I, and we were really happy we were able to go so Jax could meet family he hadn’t yet met. He got to play with his cousins and it was just a really nice time and he got some really great gifts, too.
  • Christmas was a huge hit as well. Jax got a lot of great toys and super cute clothes to grow into. It was really fun this year because he understood opening gifts and could do it himself. He won’t throw the paper on the floor though and hands you every little scrap.
  • Jax has also started naming his toy animals. He has a tiny monkey he named Baby MoMo and a tiny lion he named Kanye. Yes, you read that right. We have no idea why he chose it but it’s pretty funny hearing him call for Kanye now!

22 Months

Jaxson turned 22 months today! He’s been a very busy boy, playing and growing and driving Mommies crazy. But at the end of the day, all the snuggles and kisses make it all better. 🙂

New Vocabulary:

  • Hello! (finally! but only while pretending to talk on the phone)
  • Daniel (as in Daniel Tiger)
  • Babe (as in, “hey babe!” which he hears J & I say to each other)
  • Laundry
  • Box
  • People
  • (Aunt) Chelsea
  • “New-new Car”
  • “Mommy and Me book”
  • Yum!
  • Leaf, Tree
  • Garbage (he is such a great helper and helps me take it out!)
  • Garage
  • Seatbelt
  • Bubble bath
  • Helicopter
  • He’s starting to string words together in a sentence, and is getting the hang of manners such as “more, please”

New Skills:

  • He’s able to sort his toys by type. We have a bin that is only for his cars and no matter how messy the other toy bins get, it’s guaranteed the car bin will ONLY have cars in it.
  • He most definitely has memories now. The other morning J woke him up and he started saying “car Mommy and me” which were the two books we’d read together the night before.
  • “Drawing” – we have one of those magnetic boards with the pen and he loves drawing pictures for us.

New Likes:

  • Matchbox cars (really, ANY cars/trucks/planes/motorcycles/trains/etc.)
  • Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (the one show he will literally stop everything to sit and watch!)
  • Drinkable yogurt, which is good because at least he’s getting something in his belly.
  • We put up our Hanukkah decorations and the Christmas tree after Thanksgiving while Jax was napping. When he woke up he gasps in amazement, pointing to the lights, and going “Ooooooh!”
  • Christmas lights, we drove around the other night looking and he kept saying “Pretty! More please!” SO CUTE!

New Dislikes:

  • Mommies not letting him get away with whatever he wants (complete with full-on throwing-himself-on-the-floor tantrums)
  • Sitting in the shopping cart, he tries getting out constantly and sometimes we just have to let him sit in the big part if we’re not at the grocery store.
  • Eating…anything. He’s been so difficult with food lately, he’s even turning up his nose at old favorites.

And Everything Else:

  • If you ask Jax a question that he has to “think” about – he’ll scratch his head and go “hmmmm”.
  • We told Jax that we are going to have another baby eventually, and for fun we asked him if he thought it would be a boy or a girl. He replied that it will be a “people baby”!
  • The answer to every question is always “no” and every color is still “yellow”.
  • Aunt Betti came to visit one weekend with cousin Jolie & Marque and we had a great night at the county fair! Jax got to ride a lot of fun rides this time and we all got to go on the Carousel together.
  • We had a great Thanksgiving, with breakfast at my parents’ house and then dinner at J’s parents’ house. Aunt Beck & Uncle Charlie along with cousin Riley & Caden came to visit. Jax had a fun time playing with them, despite his bad attitude from not napping.
  • We got a new car because J’s car died for the last time…Jax loves his new car and so do Mommies because now everyone has a lot more room!
  • Discipline has been tough – he’s old enough to understand when he’s doing something wrong, but after the 500th time of saying “No, don’t ____”, we just want to give up. We don’t like saying no, but he’s definitely entering Terrible Two land where he’s starting to fight us on every. single. thing. just for the sake of fighting it and seeing if we’ll be consistent.
  • He gives the best snuggles and kisses right before bedtime, where he grabs you tight around the neck and gives you a squeeze and/or a pat on the back, and a big kiss! He’s such a loving boy!

Good Luck

Yesterday J, Jaxson, and I went to Ripley’s in Orlando to re-visit the fertility statues that are there. Last time we visited was the month before J’s second IUI, the IUI that gave us Jaxson.

IMG_5998.JPG

It was a very spiritual experience, and as I was touching the statues I was overcome with emotion. I had chill bumps and started crying, but I was feeling so peaceful and content. Despite the traffic woes, the rainy nasty day, and all the delays and stress getting out of the house that morning, it was worth all of it to have those ten minutes and the resulting peace.

IMG_5995.JPG

Many people we have told about the statues have said it’s ridiculous or superstitious, that there’s no way they could possible have anything to do with conception success. There have been tons of pregnancies after women have visited these statues, and we are one of those success stories. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, of course, but for J and I, we believe that they do give good luck. We aren’t praying to them as you would to God nor are they replacing God for us. We see them as good luck charms for our baby-making journey, just like some people wish on a falling star or keep a rabbit’s foot or have a lucky shirt.

I shared the photos of us visiting the statues on Facebook last night and got tons of positive responses and “likes”. Everyone is excited for our continued journey, but unfortunately I got one negative comment from a very religious (Christian) family member of mine. I deleted their comment because I don’t want that kind of negativity and disregard for my very positive and spiritual experience. Please don’t discount my faith or beliefs because they aren’t the same as yours, that’s why they are MY beliefs. They are important to me. Respect them as I respect yours. They could have just rolled their eyes where I didn’t have to see and not comment at all. Their choice to comment was a dick move and only showed that they have no respect for me. I have no room for that sort of behavior in my life, especially now.

Anywho, I digress. We had a lovely experience and we feel good about the future. I am glad that we got to re-visit them with our son and top off our “good luck tank” for our next baby-making journey. 🙂 I leave you with this picture, guaranteed to make you smile. I love his little face! I am so grateful for the good luck that brought him to us!

Happy Halloween 2014!

Happy Halloween everyone! This year, Jaxson was a pumpkin. We figured it was potentially the last year we could get away with putting him in a “cutesie” costume as he would be old enough next year to have an opinion of what he wants to be. He had a great time walking the mall trick or treating, and by the end of the walk he was finally getting the hang of it. We let him play in the play area before leaving the mall, and he even had his first lollipop! He had a really fun night and it was a real treat to watch him and other children enjoying themselves. He kept getting smiles from other kids and parents of course, and he even pointed out a few costumes he liked that other kids were wearing. We were just happy (and impressed!!) that he kept his pumpkin hat on the whole night without a fight. I love our little pumpkin!IMG_5813 IMG_5821 IMG_5828 IMG_5829 IMG_5833

21 Months

Happy Halloween! Jaxson turned 21 months today! Here’s what he’s been up to this month:

New Skills

  • Ballet! I showed him some of my old dance moves and within seconds he was up pirouetting and walking around on twinkle toes. I’ve been wanting to sign him up for gymnastics since he started trying to do somersaults on his own, and I really think he’d like the physical non-aggressive outlet for his energy. He does really well following examples and instructions for things like this, so I really think that gymnastics will be perfect for him. They have a class nearby that has availability for his age group, so I think once enrollment opens for the next session we’ll be signing him up!
  • Climbing! We finally got his playset put together in the backyard and he’s mastered the ladder! I figured he was ready for it when he climbed up the metal “rope” wall at the park, and sure enough he’s loving the “park” in our backyard. He keeps going for the rock wall, but he hasn’t quite figured that out yet on his own. However, he’s also done really well with…
  • Swinging! Like on the big-kid swing! Also part of his playset, after an initial almost-flipping-backward moment the first time, he now understands to hold on and we push him. He’s getting so big, so fast, and watching him crawl and climb all over the playset really hits it home for me that Jax is quickly leaving baby-hood behind. (Time for another one!)
  • Eating like a human – this one still needs some work but Jax is getting pretty good with using a fork and we’ve even had him use plates (don’t worry, they’re plastic!)
  • Shrugging his shoulders to say “I don’t know” – and he knows what he’s doing and what it means. This kid is amazingly smart.
  • Climbing into the carseat (mostly on his own, he needs help still to actually turn around and sit down) and buckling the top belt. He keeps trying to buckle the bottom belt but keeps pinching his fingers instead. Luckily he doesn’t know how to open them yet! He can also do the buckles in the grocery cart at the store, too, which is OK because it keeps him occupied. LOL

New Vocabulary

  • Clean up! (which kind of sounds like keeeeeeeee toe, because drawing out the syllables makes everything sound more fun!)
  • Batman & Spiderman (both of which at this point are just an emphatic Man!)
  • spider
  • dark
  • toy
  • elbow
  • nose
  • cheek
  • knee
  • cheese
  • pumpkin (pum!)
  • drums
  • guitar
  • smoothie (smoo)
  • milk
  • apple (bapple)
  • meat
  • O, as in the letter, which he points out now
  • Bang Bang! (as in the song!)
  • Jaxson (finally!)
  • you
  • boo-boo
  • Boo!
  • You too! (in response to “I love you!” – which I’ve been working on with him forever!)

New Likes

  • bananas
  • apples
  • drinkable yogurt
  • mustard (like me!)
  • Subway subs, extra toasty with just meat and a little bit of sprinkle cheese
  • Mommy, Mama, and Me, which we’ve had forever, but is now his current favorite bedtime story
  • glow-in-the-dark moon and star stickers on his bedroom walls
  • “Bang Bang” by Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj (he sings his heart out BANG BANG! BANG BANG BANG!)
  • his backyard “park”
  • playing with leaves

New Dislikes

  • ketchup (unlike Mama J!)
  • thunderstorms, he’ll run to us or stay close by us if there’s any sign of lightning or thunder
  • “the dark” caused by power outages. We had a situation where he freaked out because the power went out during a storm, plunging us into darkness. Mama J was in the shower and started yelling from fright! This resulted in me hunting down the flashlight (thank goodness we’d just cleared out the junk drawer!) with a toddler wrapped around my leg, yelling “Dark! Dark!” as I made my way to our bathroom to rescue J. I think he may have actually been trying to climb me, which didn’t work out so well for him.

New Experiences

  • We took Jax to the little fair set up at one of the local churches here. He loved it! He didn’t ride any rides because he was just a little too small and a little too afraid, but he loved watching all the kids laughing and screaming and having a good time. There was a giant slide and of course, that’s the one ride he really wanted to go on as he kept pointing to it and dragging us over there. He also liked all the stuffed animals that you could win as well as all the lights on the rides flashing and of course, the music. They also had a live band there and we sat and watched them for a couple of songs and he really enjoyed that, amazed at all the guitars and the drums, and dancing a little with Mama J. It was really fun and we walked around like 4 times so he could get his fill, and so we could get funnel cake. 🙂 We ended up going back with Jax’s little friend Noah and they got to ride a train and a fire truck, and we watched acrobats and daredevils on motorcycles in a cage! He loved it!
  • My cousin Tabi, her husband, and their three boys all came to visit us so we could meet baby O who is only 2 months old and soooo tiny. The older boys & Jax had a blast playing together. Jax wasn’t sure how to handle the baby and was kind of afraid of him. Honestly I think he was kind of confused why I was holding the baby – like where did he come from Mama? So we told him that soon we’d have our own baby that lives with us and we made him come look at the baby and he finally warmed up. After they left, he kept saying baby! baby! and the next morning when he woke up he started talking non-stop, chattering away. Having exposure to bigger kids is definitely good for his vocabulary and development!
  • The other night we went to a pumpkin patch in search of a pumpkin to carve (no luck! they were way too expensive) and Jax had fun running around, grabbing each pumpkin and yelling Pum!! and watching all the other kids running amok. They had a few photo op places set up and of course we made him suffer through so we could get our obligatory Fall photos (at one, he kept saying “boo-boo, knee!” because the seat made of hay was poking him).

Miscellaneous Tidbits

  • Jaxson and I got to spend a whole weekend together alone while J went off to spend time with her cousin. I was nervous and a little scared, but Jax and I survived the weekend despite a few minor mishaps. He definitely missed his Mama J and asked and looked for her a few times, but I think overall we had a great weekend together and got to spend some quality time one-on-one. It was the first time Mama J has been away from him that long and the first time I’ve had him solo since he was born! I give kudos to all single moms and stay-at-home moms out there. 24/7 care of a busy toddler is hard work! I am so lucky to have such an amazing wife that can balance both work and taking care of our boy. 🙂
  • Jaxson now has all manner of emotions, ranging from anger and delight to empathy and fear. Oh, fear. He’s now become shy when meeting new people and won’t stray far from us in new situations, which are not necessarily bad things so long as he doesn’t let it control his life. I think he’ll be just fine. If he doesn’t understand something, like a leaf for instance, he kind of does this whimpering noise while saying “oh? oh?” and comes to you for comfort. Usually once you explain, “look, this is a leaf. it comes from the trees! see them all?” he will calm down and move about his business. It’s funny to see the world through his eyes and how all these little things we take for granted can be new and exciting, but also intimidating, to our little man.
  • He very much has Mama or Mommy-only days, days where he will have close to nothing to do with me but be suffocating J and wanting her for everything, or vice versa. J is home with him all day so this can be frustrating to both of us, when she just wants a break and I just want a hug dang it, but his preferences change with the wind and we know to just cherish his snuggly ways when its our turn. The best days are those when we both are showered with Jaxson’s affection.
  • J drove him around the backyard on the tractor-lawnmower and he loved it! He wore his sunglasses the whole time! We haven’t been able to get him to wear any yet, and these were a gift, so since we live in the Sunshine State, I’m happy he finally relented and that he likes this pair.
  • Jax not only got my big feet but also my clumsiness, it seems. He walks, he trips. He runs, he falls. He sits in a big chair at the table, he is sporting a lovely bruise on his cheek from hitting the other chair on his way down.
  • He’s finally becoming more vocal around other kids, and I think we have Tabi’s boys to thank for that. He doesn’t get out much to spend quality time with other kids, so it is hard, but the last couple times at the play area in our Mall he has gone up to other kids to “play” and even talked! We are so excited for this milestone, other kids usually show interest in playing with him but of course lose that interest once he ignores them or runs back to us. We’re so glad it seems he is finally stepping out of his shell.
  • It also seems as if he’s started to understand playing pretend and using his imagination. We have no idea what he was doing, but he will play with leaves outside, bring them up to his playset, put them here, do this. It’s like we can see that he’s using his imagination to play now, which is really fun.

Tonight we are taking him trick-or-treating at Publix and then the Mall. He’s going to be a pumpkin this year and his costume is oh-so-cute! Don’t worry, Halloween costume pictures are coming soon, but in the meantime, here are pictures from this past month. 🙂

20 Months

Jaxson turned 20 months today! We are closing in on the ominous “Terrible Two’s” (and getting a little preview) and Jax is growing by leaps and bounds and learning so much. Children really are little sponges at this stage, picking up on not only actions but words and it is really just amazing to see the world through his little eyes every day.

And now for the updates!

New Skills
• walks on all fours – yep, like an animal
• hums and sings to himself while playing
• gasps in surprise or amazement – at any and everything it seems, although to him I’m sure the things we take for granted really are extraordinary
• goes down the slide on his own – and is even adventurous enough to stand up at the top now (oy vey!)
• puts on his sandals & tries to put on his shoes (which are size 7/7.5 now!)
• jumping on the bed, couch, etc.
• “blowing bubbles” (when we give him the wand w/o any soap on
• definitely musically inclined and can keep a beat on his little drum

New Vocabulary
• variations of “Guinea Pig” including “geeny” and “pig”
• Doozer (Dooz) & Murphy (Mur), which are the names of our Guinea pigs
• Bet (Aunt Betti), Jo (cousin Jolie), Mahh (cousin Marque), and Mii (Uncle Mike), Chess-y (Aunt Chelsea)
• yellow…which is now the ONLY color he’ll say most of the time
• cute
• dude
• man
• plane
• play
• bluh (bless you, when you sneeze)
• pleeeee (please)
• thank you
• “Oh, man!”
• move
• boo-boo (whenever he gets hurt, and then he runs over to us for a kiss)
• hiyah (like karate)
• “Ew!” (which he tends to use for anything on the floor such as dirt, paper, worms (outside on the porch after it rains), Guinea pig bedding, etc. and he picks it up and hands it to us to throw away)
• “Woohoo!”
• Beginning (understandable) sentences! As in “Go Car” when he wants to go somewhere, or “Move Mommy” when I don’t get out of the way fast enough for him

New Likes
• Pizza crust! Which was the first time he willingly ate any sort of bread product other than Publix cookies
• The beach! We went a few weekends ago with Uncle Mike and Aunt Betti and Jax absolutely loved playing in the water. He was afraid of the waves at first, but started calling them “bubble water” and I would pick him up over them as they rushed in which he thought was great fun. We didn’t have his swimsuit or I would have tried taking him in a little bit, so maybe next time.
• Plane rides! Jax had his first flight when we went to visit J’s grandparents for their anniversary and for me and Jax to meet most of her step-dad’s side of the family in NY. Although we missed our flight there we ended up getting on a nonstop flight that night and Jax was perfect! He didn’t have any issues with his ears popping or getting motion sick and belly-laughed so hard when we landed. On the way home, he slept on me almost the whole ride and didn’t wake up until after we got back into the airport.
• Guinea Pigs! We cleaned out and re-did Terrapin’s old tank as a Guinea Pig enclosure and Jax loves watching them run around and play. He even holds them so nicely in his lap and gives them gentle pets, although he keeps trying to poke them in the eye too so we have to keep an close eye on him.

New Dislikes
• Listening…hence my prior statement of the preview of the “Terrible Two’s”. Most of the time he is so good at listening and following the rules, but lately he has been pushing every single button J and I have, which results in timeouts, spankings, and his subsequent tears and screeching screams. Incidentally, such screams are Mamas’ new dislike this month.

Other Things
• Jax’s eyes are no longer that crisp blue-grey, and have instead started to match J’s green eyes. They still change depending on what he’s wearing, but they definitely no longer just grey or blue anymore. I love it – I wanted him to have her eye color!
• Jaxson is 100% an animal-lover. He is so gentle and kind with animals of any type and size, always fascinated with them. He is so good with Bubba, our 15 year old cat, going over and sitting next to him, giving him hugs and kisses and gentle pets. He loves to hold Murphy & Doozer, our Guinea Pigs, although I think he prefers Murphy for some reason.
• He surprised J the other day with his knowledge of animal noises, even ones we didn’t know he knew. We’d worked on elephant a while ago, but he’s recently popped out with “Hoo! Hoo!” for owls and “naaaaaaay” for a horse, which is just hilarious and the cutest thing I’ve ever heard.
• He has favorite songs, so when they come on in the car he starts singing super loudly and dancing in his car seat. We pulled out his tiny drum so he can use it all the time and he bangs on it with the drumsticks and sings or hums. Our boy is definitely a little musician in the making!
• He loves to be outside, and luckily we were able to get our porch cleaned off for him so that he can go out there again now. He will just sit there and watch the squirrels and birds in the yard and the leaves blowing in the wind. We still need to fix up and assemble his playset, which we think he’s just about big enough to go on soon!

Jaxson had a great month, full of fun new experiences! He really enjoyed the beach and I think we’ll have to suck it up and visit more often so he can have fun there. He loved the plane rides and charmed J’s family when we went to NY and absolutely loved Great-Papa, although he did not sleep a wink in the hotel (nor did we). He loves music, animals, and being outdoors and he’s learning and growing so much lately that we just can’t keep up. He is absolutely amazing, wonderful, and loving, despite the tantrums and attitude he sports from time to time. Really, though, we are just two lucky moms who love our little boy so much and enjoy watching him grow up every day.

Baby?

The other night J and I were sitting on the couch watching TV. He was sitting in J’s lap, and he decided to get up and walk over to me. He said “Mommy!” and laid his head on my lap, then “knocked” on my belly (yes like a door) and said “Baby?” I laughed and told him there wasn’t a baby in there yet, just cheeseburgers! LOL Kids are so funny. 🙂
