The Mommies

Want to know more about us? You’ve come to the right place!

My name is Bethany and I’m a Leo and proud of it. My birthday is August 12, which meant pool parties growing up but uncomfortable humid heat now that I’m older. I was born in Central Florida and raised by my grandmother and we moved to Georgia together when I was 12. I grew up as a Christian and even went to a private Christian school from 7th-12th grade, but something always rubbed me the wrong way about religion and in my heart I felt like something was amiss. Finally when I graduated high school in 2004, I moved back down to Central Florida to live with my mom and step-dad and began my journey to find who I was without interference from religion. Fast forward to 2007 and everything started to make sense when I met Jenn and realized that I was attracted to her – it was my “aha, I’m a lesbian!” moment! I enjoy writing, indie music, baking, reading a good book, and spending time with Jenn and Jaxson. My favorite color is blue and my favorite food is tomatoes, so long as they aren’t cooked! I’ll be the voice of the blog as I chronicle my experience first as the non-gestational parent of our son Jaxson and then as the gestational parent to our second child!

Jenn is a Sagittarius, and despite greatly disliking Thanksgiving, her birthday (November 26) falls on or around Thanksgiving nearly every year. A pessimistic optimist, she has a biting sense of humor and doesn’t take crap from anyone. She’s been out since she was a teenager growing up in South Florida. She is Jewish and comes from a huge family! When we were planning our wedding reception guest list, I had 5 family members to invite, and Jenn had 22 on her mom’s side and 17 on her dad’s, and that wasn’t even everyone or our friends! Jenn is the birth mother to our first son, Jaxson, and also stays at home to work two full-time jobs: raising Jaxson plus an actual job! Jenn loves watching TV, although work/Jax/school takes up a lot of time lately! She also loves baking cheesecakes and dreams of running our own cheesecake shop one day. Not only that but she loves animals and is a bit of an animal-whisperer, too. Her favorite color is green and she loooooooves pizza and cheese (and cheese on pizza!).

And here’s a timeline of important events in our lives together:

December 31, 2007/January 1, 2008: After a night watching “Dance Off, Pants Off” for New Years’ Eve, J finally got me alone to tell me how she felt about me. I was extremely flattered, but terrified, since I had no idea what I was doing when it came to a relationship! I wrote her a letter denying that I felt anything romantic for her (lie) and she wrote me one in return saying that she understood and we could just be friends (lie). So in the pretense of just being friends, we became more than that over the course of the month of January and then it happened:

February 1, 2008: I took J to the beach at midnight and told her that I had fallen for her and wanted to be with her for real. This was the start of us officially dating. πŸ™‚ I came out to my family about a month after we started dating and while the initial reception was not good, my family eventually embraced me for who I am and welcomed Jenn into the family as well.

September 7, 2009: We were dirt poor (both of us had been laid off and were on unemployment) and sitting on our couch one night when we decided that if we can stick it out together through the worst of life, then neither of us is going anywhere. So we got engaged! There was no huge, elaborate thing or even a ring exchange, we just knew that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together and that was it. We called our parents afterwards and let the planning begin…

May 2011: J and I decide that we are ready to start trying to conceive, and due to J’s change of heart, she wants to carry the first time around! So exciting! πŸ™‚

December 31, 2011: We’re finally getting married! We bought the plane tickets on New Year’s Eve and coordinated everything with our marriage officiant in Washington, D.C. since we have to leave Florida to get legally married. It’s our first big trip away together!

April 27, 2012: We FINALLY tie the knot in a private ceremony in Washington, D.C.! YAY! πŸ™‚

May 19, 2012: We had our second IUI with the fertility doctor, which leads us to…

June 4, 2012: YAY! WE ARE PREGNANT with Baby #1!! πŸ™‚

January 31, 2013: Today should have been our 39 week check up, but Jaxson showed up early! You can read about it here: Happy Birthday Jaxson!Β andΒ Jaxson’s Arrival.

February 1, 2013: J and I have been together for five years! Time flies and we can’t wait to spend many more years together.

April 27, 2013: Our first wedding anniversary!

May 16, 2013: We put in an offer on our first home…and got it!

July 26, 2013: We signed on the dotted line for our first home and moved in! We wanted Jaxson (and our future children) to have a home to grow up in since both J and I moved around a lot when we were kids. We’re in the school zone we want, close to everything we need (like Publix!), and we are very excited about this next chapter in our lives.

November 21, 2013: Thanksgiving at our new house! It also happened to be the start of Hanukkah so everyone got a gift from us and we enjoyed spending time with our families. πŸ™‚ J’s sister and her family, Nana & Papa, Grandma & Grandpa & Aunt Panda & Uncle Nick all came over to our house for a lovely meal. It was our first time cooking a turkey – ew! I can honestly say it was one of the grossest things either of us have ever done.

December 25, 2013: Jaxson’s first Christmas! And the first Christmas at our new house. πŸ™‚ I was so excited to be able to put up our colorful tree, since Christmas is my favorite holiday!

January 31, 2014: Jaxson is ONE! Already?

February 1, 2014: J and I have been together for 6 incredibly happy years today!

April 27, 2014: Today is our 2nd wedding anniversary. I know the gift is supposed to be cotton this year, but we bought ourselves a new weed-whacker instead.

November 20, 2014: After close to a year of planning, J and I finally start on our journey toward Baby #2!

January 6, 2015: Same-sex marriages are now recognized in Florida, which means we are finally considered spouses here in our home state! Awesome!

More to come!
